Coming Up: 2011 Metro Comic Con and Free Comic Book Day!

Posted by Carlo Jose San Juan, MD on Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Wow this weekend is going to be awesome for comic lovers in the Philippines.
First things first:  This Saturday, May 7, 2011, is Free Comic Book Day!  This is a worldwide event and Callous Comics along with many other Filipino Independent Komiks have something great in store, The Indies Maximus Independent Comic Sampler/Anthology!  2011 Eisner-nominee Gerry Alanguilan did the fantastic cover and talks more about it on his website.  He also talks about the importance of Free Comic Book Day and what's in store for present and future comic book lovers in the Philippines on that day.  You can find Indies Maximus in Comic Odyssey in Robinson's Galleria.
May 7-8 is also the 2011 Metro Comic Con!  This year's MCC has a whole bunch of awesomeness in store, including a signing and panel discussion with V for Vendetta illustrator David Lloyd!
And of course, I'll be behind a table in the Indie Go! Valley again!  So here are what will be featured on the Callous Comics tabletop in MCC 2011! (All prices are in Philippine Pesos)

1) Callous - The Comic Strip Series: Chocolate Chip Wishes and Caffeine Dreams

This debuted in last year's MCC as a self-printed book.  Yes, I printed each and every page on my home printer and bound each copy with my own stapler!  It was a tiring and frustrating experience which I did not wish to repeat so I sought professional printing presses since so they are nicely pressed and trimmed.  The comic strips and book size remain the same but there are additional aesthetics as well as a bigger overall print.
Anyways, this is the first-ever compilation of Callous comic strips originally published online.  It contains selected strips from 2007-2010 in glorious full-color!  Laminated board cover, 32 pages.  This costs P150 per copy and I'll gladly sign them upon request.

2) Callous Comics - Take Two Spoonfuls of the Sunny Side!
This is the second compilation of Callous gag-a-day comic strips originally published online!  It features comic strips published in 2010-2011 and also includes Sunday comics!  This book also features the "Movie Mess" storyline with an exclusive epilogue comic strip!  The cover is a collaboration between myself and another artist/physician, the amazing Dr. Joyce Dancel!  Laminated board cover, 36 pages, all full-color!  This costs P160 per copy and of course, I'll sign them upon request!

3) Callous Comics - The Land of the Guardians

Due to public demand I brought this epic storyline to print!  This book features not just one but THREE storylines: The Land of the Guardians, The Chronicles of Chaturanga, and Dark Escape!  The featured story, The Land of the Guardians, includes loads of brand new exclusive comic strips and art!   It has a preface written by myself and fabulous guest art by Jess Warren of Borked Planet and Smellabell fame and Dustin Reese of the great parenting webcomic, Plus One.  Laminated board cover, 32 pages, all full-color. This costs P150 per copy and guess what? I'll sign them upon request!
And for the uninitiated, The Land of the Guardians is a fantasy epic storyline wherein Dr. Rianne Nicah finds herself in the world of the Guardian Ducks!  An ancient threat looms over the otherworldly realm... could she be the key to defeating it?
What's this? The sequel is currently running on the website!  After reading this book, check out On Lighter Dreams and its prologue!

4) Webcomics: What's Cooking?

This book started out as a simple idea of doing a cookbook based around webcomic characters that has blossomed into a full fledged campaign to help raise money to benefit food banks across North America. “Webcomics: What’s Cooking?” is a cookbook that features fifty-plus recipes from popular webcomic creators showcasing a variety of artistic and culinary delights!  You can check out the list of contributors HERE and yes, Callous Comics is in it!
The cookbook features a full page, custom created comic from each participating artist along side a favorite dish or beverage.  The webcomic community has rallied behind this cookbook to help with this cause.  Not only with their amazing recipes, but also with their creative talents.  For MCC, each copy costs P740 and has a page inside for sketches which I'll be glad to provide upon request.  I'll leave room for other artists in case you find yourself in a comic con in another country, particularly the US, where it's quite likely you'll find another contributor. Or I can just sign my pages, whichever suits your fancy. :)

5) Callous Comics button pins

Once again, the button pins return!  I have four designs as you can see above.  These cost P30 each. :)  Oh! I'll sign their backs upon request.

Well, I hope to see you at Metro Comic Con!  And please do check out the participating comic book shops on May 7 for Free Comic Book Day.  Within MCC, National Book Store is also giving out free comics!  What a great time to be alive! ;)
